Girlfriend of man who shot Cannon Hinnant, 5, in head while he was riding his bike is also arrested over death

THE girlfriend of a man who allegedly shot Cannon Hinnant, 5, in the head while he was riding his bike, was also arrested over the child's death.

Aolani Takemi Marie Pettit, 21, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the child's August 9 murder in North Carolina.

Her arrest follows that of her boyfriend, Darius Nathaniel Sessoms, 25, who faces a first-degree murder charge in Cannon's death, WRAL reported.

During a court appearance Wednesday, it was alleged that Pettit helped her boyfriend leave town, and gave him transportation – knowing he had shot the child.

Police records showed Pettit was charged with felony accessory after the fact.

Cannon was playing outside with his siblings, riding his bike, when he was murdered, a GoFundMe set up by the child's grandmother said.

"He was merely doing what he would do any other day and that’s playing with his sisters, riding his bike, doing what kids do and all of the innocence that comes with being a child," the GoFundMe said.

The family is now seeking justice in the five-year-old's death.

Cannon's father, Austin Hinnant, told WRAL that the family is going to seek the death penalty in the child's alleged murder.

"There wasn't anything between me and him, any bad blood whatsoever, for him to have a reason to do this," Hinnant said of Sessoms.

Hinnant even told told Crime Stories with Nancy Grace that he had dinner with Sessoms the day before the incident.

Sessoms was arrested on August 10, the day after the child was killed, WTVD reported.

On Tuesday – more than a month after the child was killed – Pettit was arrested on the accessory charge.

Pettit received a secured bond of $250,000, WRAL reported.

Wilson Police have asked anyone with information on the incident to contact 252-399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
