A more dangerous virus which is more lethal for young people may be in our future, scientist says
Vaccines against the coronavirus have been developed in record time, and thanks to them we can now imagine a future without a pandemic, in which normal life returns.
However, although the end of this pandemic will come in the coming months, the reality is that in the future another virus may appear that causes even greater damage and is much more lethal in young people.
“The coronavirus has not affected young people as much, but if a virus similar to smallpox arrives, which is much more lethal, it could be much more serious,” explained the scientist and neurologist Juan Fueyo on the program laSexta noche.
The expert also stated that the arrival of a much more deadly virus could mean that it would be less contagious, as it would be less likely to replicate if the lethality rate is too high. Although, according to the scientist, “there is a possibility that there is an intermediate virus that could cause tragedy”.
Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine has an overall efficacy of 66%, but the geographical disparity of the results fuels concerns about variants.
Fueyo has explained that experts had expected an avian flu pandemic rather than a coronavirus one, but just because this hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it should be ruled out in the future.
“We are in one of the major peaks of the pandemic and we have to learn from this, produce changes in the government and in international institutions. One way of doing this is through drastic predictions, which are based on data,” the neurologist explained.
It should be remembered that the coronavirus is not particularly harmful to young people, although they have the same chances of contracting it as anyone else. However, this type of population can become an important vector of contagion for people who are vulnerable.
