Police officer shot and killed teenager in Columbus, Ohio, family member says
COLUMBUS, Ohio — An angry crowd gathered near an Ohio home Tuesday night where a police officer fatally shot a person while responding to an attempted stabbing call.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was on the scene Tuesday night to investigate a fatal shooting by a Columbus police officer. The shooting occurred just before a jury convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin of two counts of murder and one count of manslaughter in the death of George Floyd last year.
Police received a 911 call at about 4:35 p.m. regarding an attempted stabbing on Legion Lane in Columbus, Ohio.Officers later responded to the scene and at 4:45 p.m. an officer-involved shooting was reported.
Columbus Fire medics were cleared to come into the scene at 4:46 p.m., police said. The wounded person was transported in critical condition to Mount Carmel East hospital, where she was later pronounced dead , police said.
No one else was injured, according to Columbus police dispatch.
Police have provided no information about the person shot or the circumstances of the shooting.
Later Tuesday evening, Mayor Andrew Ginther urged residents to “remain calm” as authorities conduct their investigation.

“This afternoon a young woman tragically lost her life. We do not know all of the details,” Ginther said on Twitter. “There is body-worn camera footage of the incident. We are working to review it as soon as possible.
“BCI is on the scene conducting an independent investigation — as they do with all CPD-involved shootings,” he said, adding: “We will share information that we can as soon as it becomes available.”
Hazel Bryant told The Columbus Dispatch, part of the USA TODAY Network, that she is the aunt of the 15-year-old girl who was shot. The girl lived in a foster home and got into an altercation with someone else at the home, she said.
Bryant said her niece had a knife, but maintained that the girl dropped the knife before she was shot multiple times by a police officer.
