Reese Witherspoon Takes Flak for Recent Crypto Tweet
Twitter users everywhere are seemingly confused by a new tweet issued by Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon.
Reese Witherspoon Tweets About Crypto, People Push Back
Users took issue with the randomness of the message, which reads as follows:
In the (near) future, every person will have a parallel digital identity. Avatars, crypto wallets, digital goods will be the norm. Are you planning for this?
At press time, the reasons behind the tweet are unclear, and many are accusing Witherspoon of promoting some sort of scam surrounding crypto. One user wrote in response to the message:
Reese Witherspoon becoming a crypto bro was not on my 2022 bingo card.
Another wrote:
Blink twice if you need help, Reese.
Writer Zack Davisson explained:
A weird thing about Reese Witherspoon and Matt Damon is realizing that no matter how much money and fame you have, you will always take another paycheck. Neither of them NEEDS to advertise crypto, but they can’t say no to the check unless you are Tom from Myspace.
Several traders have taken issue with the idea of celebrities being used to promote crypto. Academy Award-winning writer Matt Damon has been taking quite a bit of flak recently for appearing in a commercial for Crypto.com, in which he states that fortune favors the bold and he appears to push individuals into taking chances by investing in digital currencies.
His words in the commercial are:
History is filled with ‘almosts,’ with those who almost adventured, who almost achieved, but ultimately for them, it proved to be too much. Then, there are others… The ones who embrace the moment and commit.
Several social media users posted angry or mocking messages pertaining to Damon’s presence. One user wrote:
Are you going to put your life savings into the pretend computer dog money that you can’t spend or are you a p****?
Another says:
You may be zoned out during commercials and not have noticed, but there’s an ad with Matt Damon that likens trading cryptocurrency to climbing a mountain and being an astronaut.
A final person mentions:
I don’t know nearly enough about crypto to say whether it’s a scam, but those Matt Damon ads have thoroughly convinced me it’s a scam.
Witherspoon first made headlines in the crypto space last September when she announced that she had purchased her first Ethereum. In a simple tweet, she wrote:
Just bought my first ETH. Let’s do this.
Purchasing ETH for the First Time
At the time, the news was largely well received, and the message bumped Witherspoon’s Twitter followers up to 2.9 million, though some were not too happy about a celebrity getting involved. One user wrote:
Reese Witherspoon buys $eth and instantly gets 2.9m followers. We’re entering the celebrity and media attention part of our beloved bubble tech. The parabolic move is entering the horizon.
