Meghan McCain Says Failed Insurrection Attempt at Capitol Would Have 'Killed' Late Father John McCain
Meghan McCain called for top Republicans to invoke the 25th Amendment last week after the failed insurrection attempt at the U.S. Capitol — and is now saying that if her father John McCain were still alive, watching the violent riots unfold "would have killed him."
Meghan, 36, said on Watch What Happens Live Monday that her father, a former presidential candidate and Senator for Arizona, would have died watching the attempted coup unfold.
"If he were alive, this would have killed him," Meghan told host Andy Cohen about the pro-Donald Trump riots. "I think it actually would've killed him."
John died at age 81 in 2018 after stopping treatment for stage-four brain cancer.
"I was so emotional watching it, I was absolutely apoplectic," Meghan continued. "I was hysterically crying for almost a full 24 hours. I was crying before I went on The View to talk about it."
Meghan explained that she was still having trouble expressing her emotions.
"I can't even express — I'm still sort of processing feelings, as I think all Americans are. What has been done, I don't think can be undone for generations," she said, adding that she is praying for "healing."
One day after the violent riots by Trump supporters, Meghan condemned the president on The View, calling the failed insurrection "one of the great national tragedies of my lifetime" and "one of America's darkest days."
"I have been absolutely despondent watching this. I'm here in D.C. as everyone knows. My sister-in-law works on Capitol Hill and the office door where she works, the window, was busted out," she said.
"I think this is the time to take a very hard look at where we are as a country and take a very hard look at where we are with president Trump. The bedrock of our democracy and the bedrock of who we are as Americans is the peaceful transition of power. And he is clearly a president who has turned into a mad king," continued Meghan, a longtime and vocal critic of Trump.
Meghan went on to call on "all Republicans and conservatives who still have clout" to invoke the 25th Amendment.
House Democrats formally introduced one article of impeachment against Trump on Monday, charging him with "incitement of insurrection" following the attempted coup on the Capitol by a mob of his supporters.
A vote is expected on the resolution later this week.
