Berlin crash: Female teacher killed and 11 students injured after driver mows down crowds at 'full throttle' | The Sun

A TEACHER was killed and 11 of her pupils were among the injured after a driver mounted the curb and mowed down a crowd in Berlin.

The silver Renault Clio mounted the pavement and ploughed down dozens of people before smashing into a central Berlin department store.

At least 30 people reportedly were hurt, with six facing life-threatening wounds and three being left seriously injured.

The one fatality one fatality was a teacher, 51, who was leading a group of 24 students from Hesse in central Germany when the car crashed into them in front of an H&M, reports Bild.

Another teacher with the group was also hurt, and a pregnant woman was also left with a broken hip.

Cops have since identified the driver as a 29-year-old named only as Gor H, who was arrested and is currently being evaluated in hospital.

He was known to police and his flat has been raided by the cops as they attempt to established a motive.

Bild reported an investigator said its "definitely not an accident" and described it has the actions of "someone on a rampage, an ice cold killer".

"He drove at full throttle. At no point did he slow down," one witness said.

It was earlier reported that he left a confession note, but it is now claimed cops found inside documents and posters related to his "expressed views" on the country Turkey.

Pictures show the carnage from the scene with the car crashed through the shop window as emergency crews work at the scene.

And one horrific photo shows the teacher lying dead beneath a blanket after being struck by the vehicle.

The car's driver was reportedly detained by a member of the public after he attempted to flee the scene.

"Suddenly blue lights were everywhere. The man was surrounded by a crowd of police officers," an eyewitness said.

"He came out of a side street off Douglas with the officers who were holding him and was given medical attention first. 

"After that they took him away. He seemed motionless. Had himself arrested without further ado."

At least 30 people are also said to have been injured following the incident, which took place at around 10.30am local time (9.30am BST) in Berlin's main shopping district.

Police confirmed the car mounted the pavement at the corner of Rankestrasse and Tauentzienstrasse and struck pedestrians before driving onto the road and then back onto the pavement for another 200 metres and crashing into a department store.

The crash took place outside the historic Kaiser-Wilhelm Church close to the city's zoo – opposite the site of 2016's Christmas market terror attack.

Actor John Barrowman who happened to be at the scene at the time of the crash has shared a dramatic video from the crash site.

The Doctor Who star tweeted: "We think we have witnessed a terrorist attack here in Berlin we’re not sure, there’s a lot of people, dead bodies all over the place we’ve seen a car that came down the road and ended up in a storefront covering three city blocks it’s pretty horrific."

In a subsequent video, he said he had seen a "dead body in the middle of the road" and a number of people "walking with limps and injuries".

Footage of the suspect being arrested shows him looking dazed and telling furious bystanders "help me" as he's bundled into a car by an officer.

Video seen by The Sun Online which is too graphic to publish shows the immediate aftermath of the crash, with a number of bodies scattered over the road.

Police and fire crews have been pictured at the scene, where a silver Renault Clio can be seen sticking out of a department store building front.

Berlin's fire department says 60 emergency responders are either on-site or en route to what they described as a "mass casualty event".

The fire service has also announced a state of emergency.

Spokesman Adrian Wentzel said that five people had been critically injured and three seriously.

Police said 130 emergency services personnel were on the scene.

Heavily armed police were also in place at Breitscheidplatz and the area was closed off by emergency services.

The group of pedestrians was standing on the pavement on Tauentzienstrasse close to Rankestrasse when the car ploughed into them in front of an H&M.

It also crashed through tables and chairs outside a cafe before smashing into the storefront of a branch of Douglas, a chain of perfume shops.

One reporter on the ground Joachim Fahrun said he had seen at least 10 seriously injured people removed by paramedics.

A police spokeswoman told local radio station RBB: "Currently it's about establishing [the driver's] identity, clarifying the background; is he ill, were there health problems or is it a matter of intent."

The crash took place at the same site as the terror attack on a Christmas market in 2016.

On December 19, an Islamic terrorist drove a stolen truck into the packed market, killing 12 people and injuring 67.

Writing on Twitter, German MP Saskia Esken said: "Even if we hardly know anything, especially not about possible references – the news from Breitscheidplatz brings back horrific memories.

"Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones, with those with whom we mourn and with those with whom we hope."

Berlin's mayor Franziska Giffey said: "I am deeply affected by this incident. We know that there is one dead and several seriously injured.
