A British pensioner ‘suffering from Alzheimer’s’ has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing his wife to death with a ‘kitchen knife’ in a frenzied attack on the Costa del Sol.
Police rushed to a property in the resort town of Benalmadena in Malaga on Friday night when the woman, 69, also British, frantically called to say her 80-year-old husband had stabbed her four times – before the phone line suddenly went dead.
Officers arrived at the flat, in the Maite-1 building on Antonio Machado avenue, to discover her dead on the floor of the kitchen-diner with more than 20 stab wounds, while her suspected killer was lying on their bed.
The husband, who has not yet been named, was questioned in the living room of the £130,000 home before being arrested. He is now being held at the local National Police station.
He is said to be suffering from Alzheimer’s, according to respected national newspaper El Español.
Neighbours today recalled the dramatic moment police arrived at the scene, as they tried in vain to kick the front door down before making their way in through a back entrance.
The victim, who has not yet been identified, is said to have reported her husband to police for abuse on at least two previous occasions.
According to DiarioSur, she filed an official complaint, known as a ‘denuncia’, earlier this year. However she did not follow it up with the judicial authorities, which could have seen her apply for police protection.

The front door of the couple’s one-bed first-floor flat was sealed with police tape on Saturday, with a warning sign that said ‘Do not enter.’
The doorframe was badly-damaged in a clear sign that officers responding to the emergency call had tried to force entry.
A neighbour of the couple’s in the 12-storey 1970s apartment block, which overlooks the promenade at Benalmadena seafront, confirmed police had made a failed attempt to smash the door in before gaining access via another entry at the back.
He added: ‘They’ve lived here for ages, probably around 30 years.
‘I’d heard they were both heavy drinkers and police have been around before to deal with what I presume were domestic disputes.
‘A lot of foreigners live in this block and I know they used to help new-arrivals find their feet here.
‘I never saw any younger people visiting that might have been relatives and I was told they had already decided to donate their flat to an animal sanctuary when they died.’

Another neighbour said: ‘I didn’t hear any shouting or arguing before the police arrived.
‘They tried to smash the door down but couldn’t get through it and ended up getting in via an entrance round the back.
‘It’s so horrific that it’s ended in this way.’
The alarm was first sounded at around 10.30pm on Friday when the victim made her desperate call to police, saying she had been stabbed for times before the phone went dead.
A well-placed source said: ‘She said she was being stabbed by her husband and police were mobilised along with other emergency responders but found her dead inside the property when they arrived.
‘She had been stabbed multiple times, apparently more than 20.’
Another said the suspect was thought to be suffering dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, although there has not yet been any official confirmation.
He is expected to be taken to court in the next 48 hours so he can be quizzed again by a judge in a closed hearing.

The judge will have to decide whether to remand him in prison pending an ongoing investigation or send him to a secure psychiatric hospital if it is confirmed he is suffering from a mental or brain disorder.
There has not yet been any official comment from police about the incident.
A spokesman for National Police in Malaga said on Saturday: ‘Yesterday at around 10.30pm, a man aged 80 allegedly killed his wife aged 69.
‘The victim received several stab wounds with a bladed weapon. The suspected killer has been arrested.
‘It would appear he has a psychological illness with cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease.’
