Carlton man charged after allegedly impersonating authorised officer
A man who allegedly pretended to be a health department official and made "threats of a sexual nature" towards a woman has been charged with a series of offences.
Victoria Police had been searching for Abdulfatah Awow, 25, after he allegedly went to a Burwood address on July 14. They alleged it was there he made threats of a sexual nature to the woman before she asked him to leave.
On Wednesday, too, Victoria's COVID response commander Jeroen Weimar said he was aware of an investigation into the man.
"Let me be very clear: authorised officers, when they make home visits, there are three things we should all be aware of," Mr Weimar said.
"They will always be in uniform, they will always have identification, and they will never, under any circumstances, seek entry into your home."
Victoria Police said on Thursday afternoon Mr Awow was taken into custody and later, in the evening, they said he would face 11 charges.
"Whitehorse Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a 25-year-old man who allegedly attempted to impersonate a Department of Health authorised officer in Burwood on [July 14]," a spokeswoman said.
Police said the Carlton man would face 11 charges including attempting to procure sexual penetration by threat, attempting to procure a sexual act by fraud, stalking, impersonating an authorised officer, possessing identification information, and committing an offence while on bail.
Mr Awow was remanded in custody to appear in court on August 19.
