Death in park not treated as suspicious, police working on identification

Police forensic investigators are working to identify human remains found in secluded parkland in Melbourne’s north.

A police spokeswoman said officers were called to the Greenvale Reservoir Park after a member of the public discovered the remains about 3.30pm on Tuesday.

“Detectives are investigating the circumstances and the death is not being treated as suspicious,” the spokeswoman said.

“Police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem.”

The expansive parkland – which includes walking tracks and picnic tables – borders Aitken Boulevard, Roxburgh Park, to the east and Mickleham Road, Greenvale, to the west.

Elias Mathew, who lives in the neighbourhood, said gates to the fenced-off reservoir were only reopened in recent months after being closed for some time.

He described the area as quiet and serene, saying some residents use the open parkland to walk their dogs and have picnics.

“It’s mainly just locals that use it,” he said.

“They’ve been doing construction works at the reservoir for a long time.”

Resident Jay, who asked for his surname to be withheld, said he cycled in the park with his son on Monday night. Then, about 6.30pm on Tuesday, he noticed police in the area and later learned about the human remains being discovered.

“Not many people use the area. It’s been closed for about the past five years and only reopened recently,” he said.

“It’s a very isolated area … bad things can happen.”

The park was closed while Melbourne Water remodelled the reservoir and dam wall. Parks Victoria monitors the land around the reservoir.

Forensic investigators were collecting evidence from the parkland throughout Wednesday, carrying plastic and brown paper bags to and from the scene.

Around midday, extra officers arrived to drop off additional gardening implements, including a whipper snipper and rakes.

Other officers were carrying shovels, while aerial photographs showed coloured crime scene markers scattered across an open area bordered with trees.

It is unclear how long the remains have been at the site.
