This is the moment a fugitive tries to hide in a jacuzzi after leading police on a terrifying 80mph chase the wrong way down a dual carriageway.

Jay Hursham, 23, clambered into the hot tub as armed cops tracked him down to a family’s back garden following his role in a machete attack.

A police helicopter’s thermal camera shows Hursham being hauled out of the jacuzzi as officers train their rifles on him.

He was one of three people who were caught on camera leading officers on a high-speed chase the wrong way down the A127 near Brentwood, Essex, causing lorries and cars to swerve to avoid a collision.

The trio had attacked a man in his 20s hours earlier, leaving him with life-changing injuries in South Ockendon just after midnight on July 1, 2020.

This week, Hursham and his accomplices – Bradley Dulieu, 22, and 20-year-old Talliq Mwalim – were jailed for a total of 57 years at Basildon Crown Court.

Helicopter footage shows Hursham, Dulieu and Mwalim as they flee in a grey BMW X5 while being pursued by police.

Traffic police shunted into the car, bringing it to a halt in a residential area of Upminster, East London.

The driver, Dulieu, was arrested in the car, while Mwalim was detained after a short foot chase.

Hursham made off over residents’ fences and through their gardens before trying to hide inside a hot tub.

Armed officers, guided by a police helicopter, surrounded the hot tub and pulled Hursham out where he was arrested while covered in blood.

Following a trial on December 20 last year, Hursham and Mwalim were convicted of attempted murder, while Dulieu was found guilty of GBH with intent.

On Monday, Hursham, of South Ockendon, was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

Mwalim, of Upminster, was jailed for 23 years and Dulieu, of Dagenham, was handed 10 years in prison.

Detective Superintendent Natalia Ross, of Essex Police, said: ‘This was a brutal and prolonged attack where these three men subjected the victim to extreme violence.

‘They had armed themselves and hunted him down with the clear intent to leave him with significant injuries. Such was the ferocity of this attack, he is lucky to be alive.

‘Then in an attempt to escape justice, Hursham, Mwalim, and Dulieu put the safety of dozens of other people at risk by travelling at high speed on the wrong way on a busy road.

‘Their reckless actions show how little they value life.

‘It is testament to the work of the first responders and medical professionals that the victim has survived and to the responding officers whose tenacity, dedication, and professionalism meant this gang were unable to escape.

‘Now, thanks to our thorough investigation they will be spending the foreseeable future behind bars. Today, Essex is a safer place.’
