Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger has become the first Republican to publicly demand the resignation of Matt Gaetz — and he cites newly reported money links between his embattled fellow congressman and a sex trafficking-accused pal.
“Matt Gaetz needs to resign,” Kinzinger, (R-Ill.), tweeted Thursday night.
The tweet links to a Daily Beast story that details $900 in cash transfers made on a single night in May, 2018 between Gaetz and the Florida congressman’s friend, Joel Greenberg.
The former Seminole County tax collector is currently indicted on 33 counts, including sex trafficking charges involving a 17-year-old girl.
Earlier Thursday, Greenberg’s lawyer said in court that his client intends to take a plea deal in the case, in which he allegedly paid the girl for sex.
Gaetz sent $900 via Venmo to Greenberg that night — and the very next morning, Greenberg sent $900 to three young women, one of whom was only 18, according to a report.
“Hit up [redacted],” Gaetz said in the memo field to one of the transfers to Greenberg, The Daily Beast wrote in revealing the puzzling transfer.
The redacted name is a nickname for a teen who had turned 18 less than six months before the money changed hands; the news outlet withholding her name due to her age.
The implication — that Greenberg may have been an intermediary between Gaetz and three young women he paid $900 to — is the latest wrinkle in the pair’s toxic relationship.
It was the fed’s investigation into Greenberg that led them to also investigate Gaetz for allegedly sex-trafficking a girl under the age of 17.
Gaetz has boasted to fellow Florida pols about women he met through Greenberg, and reportedly flashed around nude videos of some of the women.
Gaetz has maintained his innocence, and no charges have been filed.
As for Kinzinger, it’s not the first time he has broken ranks with fellow Republicans — he was one of just three in the GOP who voted to convict former President Trump in his second impeachment.
“There is no doubt in my mind that the president of the United States broke his oath of office and incited this insurrection,” he said in a statement then.
