An Indiana mother has been jailed after she was caught traveling across the city of Indianapolis with her crying two-month-old twins in a milk crate strapped to her bicycle.

Blossum Kirby, 36, will spend a year behind bars after being convicted of neglect of a dependent for her actions.

Multiple people called 911 when they saw Kirby traveling across Indianapolis with the infants in a milk crate that was attached to the front of her bicycle in July 2022.

Some say they saw the mother nearly fall off the bike as the babies sat in the plastic box during the scorching summer heat.

When police stopped her, Kirby told them she always transported her children that way – because she did not have a car, court documents stated.

The two-month-old babies, one boy and girl, were found in their diapers in the milk crate on the hot day in Indianapolis, Indiana

The kids were just wearing diapers in the mid 80s summer sunshine, and the crate was being held on by a bungee cord, pictures showed.

The babies, one boy and one girl, were taken to Riley Hospital for Children and treated for sunburns and minor scratches.

Brian Henderson, who witnessed the ordeal, said that he first thought the two children were dolls until he saw one of the twin’s arms moving.

He shared a video at the time, and was heard saying: ‘You can’t have those babies in there like that, ma’am.’

Suezanne Lynch had also seen Kirby transporting the children in the crate, and told Fox 59: ‘She had told me that prior to me stopping her, she had one baby in the front and one baby in the back.

The mother was handed two years in prison, with one year suspended for both counts – which would be served concurrently

‘She couldn’t control the bike that well, so she put both babies in the one milk crate in the front. [She said] that was her way of transporting the babies any time she left.’

The passerby added: ‘It was heartbreaking. What I can’t stop thinking about is I know I wasn’t the only one to see her there were so many people who drove past her and just kept driving for who knows how long.’

On May 22, 2023, the mother was found guilty on both child neglect counts by a Marion County jury.

She was handed two years in prison, with one year suspended for both counts – which would be served concurrently.
