M5 lorry fire: Massive 'explosion' causes chaos after lorry bursts into flames causing six miles of traffic queue
A LORRY carrying cider burst into flames on the M5 near Bristol today – causing 6 miles of traffic jams.
The Westons Cider vehicle caught fire between junction 20 and 19 near Clevedon just after 1pm.
Photos of the chaos show a fireball engulfing a Westons Cider lorry.
The blaze shut the motorway in both directions at junction 20, Ettlingen Way, and drivers have been warned to avoid the area.
Queues stretch back more than six miles from the scene.
Emergency crews are attending the inferno and luckily no injuries have been reported.
Northbound traffic was held at 1.25pm, while vehicles travelling south were stopped ten minutes later.
The closure was reduced to one lane shortly after 3pm, but drivers should expect the delays to add about 49 minutes to their journeys.
A spokesperson for Avon & Somerset Police said: "A road closure is currently in place on the M5 northbound from between junction 20 (Clevedon) to junction 19 (Portishead) due to a vehicle fire. There are no reported injuries.
"Long delays are expected and motorists are advised to avoid the route."
Travel site Inrix says: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to vehicle fire on M5 in both directions at J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way (Clevedon)."
