Petition demanding $2,000 stimulus checks every month from Congress during pandemic passes 2million signatures
A PETITION demanding $2000 monthly stimulus checks has passed more than two million signatures.
The petition was started by Colorado restaurant owner Stephanie Bonin and first posted on Change.org last year.
A third round of payments worth up to $1,400 are being sent out across the country with some 730,000 bonus checks worth $1.3 billion, having gone out during the last seven days.
Bonin’s petition demanding cash from the government is fast gathering signatures and if it hits three million will become one of the most signed in the website.
It has gathered so much support that Change.org recognized it in its list of top 10 petitions that changed 2020.
"I'm calling on Congress to support families with a $2,000 payment for adults and a $1,000 payment for kids immediately, and continuing regular checks for the duration of the crisis,” she says in the petition
"Otherwise, laid-off workers, furloughed workers, the self-employed, and workers dealing with reduced hours will struggle to pay their rent or put food on the table."
Bonin urges Congress to issue "immediate checks and recurring payments."
"Congress needs to make sure that we won't be financially ruined for doing our part to keep the country healthy," she wrote.
The Trump administration issued two stimulus checks for, $1,200 and then $600 but Bonin criticized the amount of time it took Congress to come to an agreement.
"Another single check won't solve our problems – people are just too far behind," Bonin wrote on the petition.
"Supplying Americans with monthly support until they can get back on their feet can save our communities from financial ruin.”
The latest extra money is being seen as a "booster shot" of stimulus cash, as part of President Biden's $1.9 trillion Covid recovery package.
Child credit has been extended for 2021 thanks to Biden's Covid relief package that was signed off in March, which has also seen millions receive stimulus checks of up to $1,400.
The American Rescue Plan Act mandated that each eligible family receive up to $3,600 for qualifying dependents.
