Suella Braverman makes her pitch to Tory faithful in speech today

Suella Braverman makes her pitch to Tory faithful: Home Secretary set to let loose on immigration as she vies with Kemi Badenoch and Penny Mordaunt to stake claim as next leader – but MPs warn ‘preeners’ don’t get the top job

Suella Braverman will make her pitch to the Tory faithful today amid claims a host of senior ministers are ‘on manoeuvres’.

The Home Secretary is expected to double down on her pledge to curb immigration when she gives her keynote speech to the party conference in Manchester later.

In another crowd-pleasing announcement, Ms Braverman is set to vow that sex offenders will no longer be able to change their name of gender to evade monitoring.

The intervention comes after Kemi Badenoch, also touted as a contender should Rishi Sunak’s bid to see off Labour fail, used a tub-thumping address yesterday to blast ‘woke‘ views.

She lashed out over trans rights, Remainer defeatism and the pace of reaching green targets.

Meanwhile, Commons Penny Mordaunt has also been busily glad-handing at conference, including speaking at a Next Gen reception last night.

However, she has been careful to stress her loyalty to Mr Sunak. When one activist shouted ‘Penny for PM!’ she rebuked them, saying ‘no, no, no… calm down.’

One former Cabinet minister told MailOnline that the jockeying was not ‘tasteful’ and ‘preeners don’t become leaders’.

Although Mr Sunak is regarded as safe until the general election, there is a strong sense that – with Labour consistently showing double-digit leads – some in Cabinet are already looking to the future

Ms Braverman, Ms Badenoch and Ms Mordaunt all ran for Tory leader last year – and have secured Cabinet jobs under Mr Sunak.

In her speech, the Business Secretary rejected the ‘narrative of hopelessness’ for ethnic minorities that suggests ‘British society is against you and you’re better off asking for reparations’.

She said the Tories were in line with civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King because they believe ‘people should be judged by the content of their character, not the colour of their skin’.

Ms Braverman was accused of grandstanding after going to Washington last month to deliver a speech dismissing multiculturalism as ‘failed’ and demanding reform of the UN and European human rights conventions to help stop the Channel boats.

Ms Badenoch has also lashed out at the ECHR – hated by many Tory activists – saying that leaving the pact should be ‘on the table’.

Ms Mordaunt is due to give her keynote speech tomorrow, and is expected to focus her fire on Keir Starmer and the threat of militant unions gaining control if he wins the election.

However, the ex-Cabinet minister said: ‘There is always some preening at conferences. It is not particularly helpful or tasteful. The people who preen rarely end up becoming leader.

‘You only have to look at Portillo or Heseltine.’
