Sunderland gas explosion: Roof blown off house in horror blast as two people injured
TWO people have been injured in a horror gas explosion – with the roof blown off a house in the blast.
Emergency services rushed to the scene in Whickham Street, Sunderland, just before 4pm.
Shocking pictures show debris strewn across the street and the extent of the damage to the house, with half of the property destroyed.
Two people have been taken to hospital.
A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "Our colleagues at @NEAmbulance have confirmed that two casualties have been transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"We will remain at the scene this evening to assess the site and ensure the safety of residents in the immediate area."
Four fire engines were sent to the scene, with crews taping off the area.
A Northumbria Police spokesman added: “At 3.45pm today we received a report of a suspected gas explosion at an address on Whickham Street, Sunderland.
“Emergency services are at the scene.”
