Who is Tim Ryan and is he running for the Senate?
TIM Ryan, the US Representative of Ohio's 13th congressional district, has launched his campaign for the US Senate seat of The Buckeye State.
The Democratic representative will attempt to turn the red state back to the blue side in 2022.
Who is Tim Ryan?
Born in Niles, Ohio, Ryan, 47, entered Congress in 2003 as a Democrat representing Ohio's 17 congressional district at the time.
In 2012, he redistricted to Ohio's 13th congressional district, and has served five terms as US Representative for the 13th district.
Ryan's district takes in a large swath of northeastern Ohio, from Youngstown to Akron.
The 47-year-old politician is married to Andrea Zetts, have a son together, Brandy.
Ryan also lives with Zetts's two children from her previous relationship.
Is he running for the Senate?
Ryan launched a campaign for Senate on April 26, giving Democrats their first candidate in the race to success Republican Senator Rob Portman, who is not running for re-election in 2022.
The 10-term congressman first made his intentions known in a filing with the Federal Election Commission that identifies him as a Senate hopeful.
"The success of America isn’t housed in the halls of Congress," Ryan said in an announcement video.
"It lies in the calloused hands and the unrelenting grit of America’s workers. Those who dug the deepest sent our nation soaring."
His campaign video is covered in football imagery – he was a quarterback at Warren John F Kennedy High School – and features Ryan and his son, Brady, talking about the strength of family and the decline of manufacturing.
"Somewhere along the way, something broke," Ryan says as father and son approach an abandoned factory.
"We forgot what made us successful in the first place."
Who is in the race for Ohio's senate seat in 2022?
So far, Ryan is the only Democrat in the race, another name being tossed around is Dr Amy Acton – the former state health director who stepped down from her nonprofit position to "carefully explore" running for US Senate.
The rest of the candidates who have declared for the Senate seat are:
- Mike Gibbons: a former candidate for US Senate in 2018
- Josh Mandel: A former Ohio State Treasurer and former nominee for US Senate in 2012 and 2018
- Bernie Moreno: a businessman
- Jane Timken: a former chair of the Ohio Republican Party
