Shanghai Seeking To Integrate Metaverse Over Next Five Years

Shanghai, China’s largest city by population, has announced its intention to include the metaverse in public services and other enterprises over the next five years.

According to a report by CNBC, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology’s five-year development plan, which was released on 30 December 201, includes provisions for the integration of the metaverse into public services, entertainment and industrial manufacturing.

The commission intends to incentivize further use and study for the technology of the metaverse, including its application in sensors and other real-time integrations.

CNBC says that Chinese media has reported that the Shanghai city document represents the first time a local government has mentioned the metaverse in conjunction with Beijing’s five-year plan released in March 2021. At the time, the Beijing proposal alluded to seven “frontier” technologies that China would focus on in order to develop self-reliance in science and technology.

According to the report, Shanghai did not give a specific timeline or goal for meeting its metaverse research and development

The news came in the wake of Beijing-based Baidu holding what it claimed to be China’s first conference in the metaverse, marking the opening of the company’s metaverse app to developers roughly six years before it is expected to launch.
