In a statement, police said members of Victoria Police’s Special Operations Group attended an Ardmona home about 10.15am on Wednesday.
“The tactical officers were acting on information Turvey was at the address,” the police statement said.
“SOG operatives were confronted by Turvey, who was armed, and subsequently shot him. First aid was provided and paramedics declared him deceased at the scene.”
Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the incident and the State Coroner has been notified.

Turvey had been pursued by police since Monday after he resisted arrest and fled a Katandra West property in an allegedly stolen vehicle.
Police had visited the property following reports a man armed with a firearm had assaulted a woman and stolen a white Toyota HiLux from Yarrawonga that morning.
Turvey allegedly approached the officers and fired a gun into the air, before fleeing from the property in the allegedly stolen vehicle.
Police officers followed Turvey but lost control of their vehicle and rolled on a country road. Two officers suffered minor injuries.
Turvey stopped at a house in the nearby town of Youanmite, where police allege he forced a man to drive him to Finley across the NSW border.
The driver was then released uninjured, police said.
The ute was recovered by police on Tuesday afternoon in Fraser Street at Tatura, south-west of Shepparton.
