Boris Johnson WILL stand for re-election as MP for Uxbridge & South Ruislip when the country next goes to the polls

  • Boris Johnson has confirmed he will stand for Parliament again at next election
  • The former PM quashed rumours he might quit for more lucrative outside work
  • Mr Johnson pulled out of race to succeed Liz Truss leaving Rishi Sunak as the PM

Boris Johnson will stand for re-election as an MP when the country next goes to the polls, it was revealed today.

The former PM has informed his constituency association that he intends to be the Tory candidate in Uxbridge & South Ruislip when the ballot is triggered – expected to be 2024.

After he pulled out of the contest to succeed Liz Truss, leaving the way clear for Rishi Sunak to become PM, there was speculation Mr Johnson would opt to leave Parliament and take on more lucrative work in the private sector.

A slew of other MPs have quit ahead of a Monday deadline set by CCHQ for sitting politicians to make their intentions clear.

However, Mr Johnson has insisted he has no intention of leaving Parliament – and a boundary review due to be formalised within months appears to have bolstered his theoretical majority.

At the 2019 election – when he led the Tories to a landslide victory – he won by 7,000 votes.

Mr Johnson looked on the verge of a bombshell return to Downing Street in October when he secured the 100 nominations required to go to a ballot of members.

However, he then dramatically withdrew – saying it was not the right time for a comeback. Many supporters still hope he can reclaim the leadership at a later stage.

A host of other Tories have already opted out of running again, with Labour riding high in the polls.

They include Dehenna Davison, who stunned politics by capturing the Red Wall fortress of Bishop Auckland three years ago.

William Wragg and Chloe Smith are also among the senior figures stepping down.
