Burst water main sends thousands of gallons into the air as it floods Sheffield city centre

A burst water mains pipe has caused flooding in a busy city centre after thousands of gallons of water was sent flying into the air.

The pipe in Sheffield city centre was damaged during road works yesterday, leading to chaos on the high street as shops were without water or forced to close.

Water flow for the area was temporarily shut off following the incident as contractors working at the site tried to minimise the disruption caused by placing sandbags around local businesses.

Video footage of the incident posted to X, formerly Twitter, shows a huge fountain of water spraying out from the ground into the air.

Streams of water can also be seen running down the high street as members of public looked on in shock at the unfolding chaos.

Yorkshire Water confirmed that the damge was caused by a third party contractor and the water to the area was shut off quickly.

It added that the water supply has now been restored and repairs to the pipe have also been completed.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said yesterday: ‘We attended site quickly this afternoon and isolated the section of main to stop the burst. We carried out a rezone to restore supply to all properties.

‘Our teams will complete the repairs as soon as possible and we apologise for the inconvenience caused.’
