Fluffy American pancakes and banana bread are BBC Food’s most popular recipes of the year as Britons take up home baking in Covid lockdowns

BBC Food’s most popular recipes of the year include fluffy American pancakes and banana bread as Briton’s take up home baking during lockdowns.
The website had a record-breaking year in 2020 after millions of people were stuck at home, with an average of 3.4million UK browsers visiting BBC Food each week.
Figures were up 74% on 2019 with millions turning to the website for ‘advice, inspiration and tips’ according to the BBC.

Recipes for fluffy American pancakes, banana bread and Mary Berry’s scones topped the list as the most popular last year.
With 3.5 million total UK unique browsers, the fluffy American pancakes recipe took the top spot for nine months of the year.
The only other recipes to hit the top spot were lockdown favourite – banana bread – in April, Mary Berry’s scones for VE Day in May and gingerbread men in December.

With millions stuck at home during lockdown, baking proved a popular pass time, with different cakes, cookies and breads topping the list last year.
Easter was the website’s busiest week, with 6.4million UK browsers searching for tips and recipes.
Christmas Eve saw the largest number of people browsing for recipes, at 1.5million, as people headed to site for help with Christmas dinner.
The Hairy Bikers’ honey-glazed gammon recipe topped charts as the most viewed across Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

This comes as almost a billion loaves of bread were made in kitchens in the six months after coronavirus restrictions were first introduced, researchers have found.
It was revealed that 960 million loaves were baked at home between March and September.

The astonishing figure represents an average of more than one loaf a week for each of Britain’s 27.6 million households.
Just over a third of adults said they had started baking their own bread this year, with almost half of them aged 25 to 34.
On average, each amateur baker made two loaves a week, but 15 per cent said they churned out four or more.
