Paramedics performed CPR on both children, aged four, but were unable to revive either.

A woman was also treated for shock.

A police spokeswoman said the fire was “smouldering” with low-level flames when fire and rescue, police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

Police detectives and fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, but police said initial reports suggest a candle was left burning inside the house.

The single-storey property, which is on Mafeking Road in Goonengerry, is part of a multi-occupancy community.

The spokeswoman said damage to the building was mostly due to smoke and not fire, with no major structural damage.
