Motorists on the M5 are stuck in huge queues and told to expect delays as it closes in both directions due to a ‘serious collision’ involving two cars.

Initially reported as a crash, the incident in the Somerset area is now being treated as serious with one person sustaining injuries. 

Vehicles have been at a standstill since 6am this morning, causing three miles worth of congestion and delays of around 30 minutes. 

The motorway is expected to be closed between junction 26 for Wellington and junction 27 for Tiverton for some time with emergency services at the scene. 

Devon and Cornwall Police have advised drivers to avoid the M5 or to delay their journeys if possible.

A spokesperson said: ‘Police were called at around 5.30am to reports of a serious collision involving two vehicles on the M5 Northbound between junctions 26 and 27.

‘One person is reported to have sustained injuries and the road remains closed whilst emergency services remain at the scene.

‘There is currently a complete closure on the M5 in both directions at the scene. Highways are assisting with putting diversions in place and traffic within the closure will be aided to move when possible.’
