SADISTIC "Angel of Death" nurse Beverley Allitt smirked and laughed during police interviews after murdering four children, a chilling documentary reveals.

The monster killed seven-year-old Liam Taylor, 11-year-old Timothy Hardwick, two-month-old Becky Phillips and 15-month-old Claire Peck in a 59-day killing spree.

Baby-faced Allitt – then aged 21 – tried duping cops during interviews after injecting the tots with insulin at Grantham Hospital in 1991.

Haunting new documentary British Police: Our Toughest Cases on Quest Red also reveals how the "arrogant" nurse laughed when she was charged with four counts of murder.

DSI Stuart Clifton, who interviewed her, said: "She's placed in a police cell, and you have to remember that this is a girl that's about 21 years of age, never been in trouble with the police, she gets all of these charges and she's laughing. She's happy about them.

"She was an evil, callous, calculating person. She knew what she was doing. These are defenceless children who rely on her and she's attacking them."

CHILLING POLICE TAPES

Allitt carried out her killing spree by tampering with injections at the hospital before staff realised a murderer was stalking the wards.

The fiend attempted to kill nine other children – with some victims still so tormented by the nightmare ordeal they are scared to sleep at night.

She was diagnosed with Munchausen’s syndrome by proxy – meaning she invented illnesses and injured others and herself for attention.

The harrowing police tapes reveal Allitt tried to "bamboozle" cops with her medical knowledge and sighs when asked why she attempted to kill five-month-old Paul Crampton.

She replies: "I'm really going to give a harmful drug to a helpless baby?"

GRISLY 59-DAY KILLING SPREE

Allitt began her killing spree in February 1991 when eight-week-old Liam apparently died from an undiagnosed heart condition.

Over the next few months, depraved Allitt developed a taste for bloodlust and went on to murder three other babies.

On the surface, the nurse appeared unassuming and hoodwinked parents into gaining her trust – with some even asking the killer nurse to become their baby's godmother.

But behind the scenes, devious Allitt was targeting vulnerable youngsters and ripping pages from the hospital logbook in an attempt to cover up her gruesome crimes.

She was finally caught when hospital staff noticed the high death toll and called police, who charged her with four murders, 11 attempted murders and 11 counts of causing grievous bodily harm.

'NO REMORSE'

But she still continued to torture her victims and their families by refusing to plead guilty when she appeared at Nottingham Crown Court in 1993.

Former Detective Michelle Billingsley, who took Allitt to her first court appearance, tells the show: "I was shocked that someone could do all these things and not feel any remorse whatsoever.

"But not only was there no remorse, it was the smile, the shrugging of the shoulders, she was leaning forward looking out the van at the people that had gathered round the court as if she was looking forward to appearing there."

Allitt was found guilty on every charge and given 13 life sentences in 1993.

Allitt was visited by DSI Clifton in Rampton just months after she was convicted but the nurse still showed no remorse for the grisly crime.

He said previously: "She wouldn’t give any explanation as to why she’d done it. She merely said, 'Yes, I’m responsible, but I didn’t do all 13, I only did 9'."
