Discord Pauses Cryptocurrency and NFT Plans Following Community Pushback
Popular messaging platform Discord has announced it will pause its plans to push into the cryptocurrency and non-fungible token (NFT) space after a wave of backlash from users.
According to a report by TechCrunch, Discord co-founder and CEO Jason Citron recently told Discord users that his firm does not have impending plans to shift its business into crypto and NFTs.
The report follows on the heels of a tweet by Citron on November 8 teasing the integration of the crypto wallet MetaMask with Discord’s user interface.
Discord users responded to the tweet with strong objections, including a campaign to cancel their premium subscriptions to the service. Some users cited disdain with the environmental impact of crypto mining while others feared Discord would become another realm for the “NFT bros.”
Citron walked back his earlier tweet with another message to community members saying that Discord had “no current plans to ship this [crypto] internal concept.”
In a separate statement to TechCrunch, Discord clarified its position:
We appreciate all the perspectives we’ve been hearing in response to the internal concept you may have seen in a tweet earlier this week and want to clarify we have no plans to ship it at this time. We’re excited about the potential for web3 technology and the positive ways these communities are coming together on Discord, especially those organized around environmentally friendly, creator-focused projects. However, we also recognize there are some problems we need to work through. For now we’re focused on protecting users from spams, scams and fraud.
