Biden COVID-19 plan ‘wishful thinking’ or real policy? Readers sound off

Many thanks to President Joe Biden for passage of his American Rescue Plan and for his remarkable advancements in the fight against the coronavirus. He and his administration worked extremely hard to get it passed. As someone who has friends who have suffered or died from this terrible scourge I, for one, am profoundly grateful.

And thanks also to Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, former presidents from both parties, for getting together for an ad campaign designed to encourage all of us to get the vaccine. It’s clear that these gentlemen are team players who truly care for all of their fellow Americans.

Of the country’s many problems, two related ones are most immediate: the pandemic and the resulting faltering economy.

For the first, Biden proposes that we maintain masks and social distancing until enough of us get vaccinated. Then we can relax the rules safely. For the second, he proposes the American Rescue Plan. Many Republican politicians oppose his having success on either front. Gov. Greg Abbott has lifted the mask mandate in Texas and already started blaming Biden for what will be an inevitable spike.

Congressional Republicans unanimously opposed the American Rescue Plan. 

For the next four years, though, either Biden succeeds, or America fails. Republicans fighting to keep Biden from succeeding  are opposing the interests of their constituents.
